What Is the Comdata Fuel Card?

Comdata is a fleet fuel card program built for businesses that want tighter spending control, detailed reporting, and discounts at truck stops for both local and over-the-road fleets. It’s designed to help you manage fuel spend with driver and vehicle controls, capture detailed transaction data at the pump, and simplify back-office work like billing, audits, and fuel tax reporting.

One thing that sets Comdata apart is its network-based pricing and discount structure. At in-network locations, Comdata can price fuel at the cash rate (instead of the higher credit rate), and discounts vary based on the plan you choose. As you move up in subscription tiers, you unlock stronger discounts and additional tools. On the management side, Comdata also offers analytics and reporting, giving fleets visibility into spend, discounts, merchant activity, and potential misuse in one dashboard.

Where Is the Comdata Fuel Card Accepted?

Comdata is accepted at 8,000+ truck stops nationwide, which covers most truck stops in the U.S. Since Comdata’s core customers are trucking fleets that fuel at truck stops, that’s usually plenty of coverage for most operations. You can find specific locations using the Comdata Merchant Locator. And if you need even more coverage, Comdata also offers a Comdata Mastercard, which is accepted at Comdata locations plus anywhere Mastercard is accepted.

Comdata Fuel Card Discounts

Comdata offers three subscription plans with different discounts, fees, and features. As you move up in plan level, you get better discounts. Comdata also charges the cash price (not the credit price) at in-network locations, which is often 10-20¢ per gallon cheaper than the credit price you pay with most other cards.

For fleets with more than 20 vehicles, a Comdata account representative will give you a custom discount plan.

Comdata Fuel Card Controls and Reporting

Controls

  • OneClick app unlock: Drivers use the Comdata app to unlock a fuel card before a purchase, and the card will default back to a locked position after a set time limit to prevent fraud.
  • Network restrictions: Only allow the card to fuel up at specific locations.
  • Product limits: Set dollar limits by product category on non fuel purchases.
  • Transactions per day: Number of fuel transactions permitted on each card per day.
  • Daily gallon limit: Gallon amount a driver can purchase per day.
  • Day of week: Days when a card can be used.
  • Time of day: Hours when a card can be used.
  • Merchant proximity restriction (requires telematics integration): Decline transaction if vehicle is too far away from station.
  • Tank level restriction (requires telematics integration): Track the vehicle's fuel level and tank capacity. Decline transactions that exceed the vehicle's tank capacity.
  • Fraud protection: Real-time fraud monitoring and alerts, app unlock before fueling.

Reporting

  • Real-time alerts: Get alerts for flagged transactions.
  • Real-time transaction history: Monitor all fuel purchases in real time.
  • Transaction detail report: See details for every transaction. Filter by time period, card, driver, vehicle, GL code, etc.
  • Account spend by merchant: See which stations your fleet spends the most money at.
  • Exception reports: Flagged transactions when a card is used outside your designated parameters.
  • FleetAdvance: An Analytics tool that shows where drivers or vehicles fuel, what they spend, and where they could save money with better fueling decisions. It also provides real-time transaction visibility and alerts, plus “report cards” to evaluate driver behavior and coach improvements.
  • OneLook: Analytics dashboard platform inside iConnectData (ICD) that shows KPIs, visualizations, and summary charts so you can monitor fleet/account health without digging through big spreadsheet reports.

Pros and Cons of the Comdata Fuel Card

Pros

  • Strong truck stop savings through plan-based discounts at major truck stops.

  • Cash-price fueling at in-network locations, so you’re not paying the higher credit price at the pump.

  • Built for trucking ops, with tight controls plus reporting and analytics tools (exception reporting, merchant spend views, driver behavior insights).

Cons

  • Customer feedback on Trustpilot is mixed

  • No clearly stated fraud-loss guarantee

  • Acceptance is truck-stop focused. It’s great for fleets who primarily fuel at truck stops, but it’s not a "fuel anywhere" card unless you add the Comdata Mastercard option.

Comdata Alternatives

One strong alternative to consider is the Voyager fuel card, which offers:

  • Accepted at 97% of fuel stations
  • No monthly card fees, account setup fees, late fees, or extended network fees
  • Trustpilot rating: 4.8/5
  • Free fraud loss coverage
