How To Find CFN Fuel Prices Before You Fill Up [CFN Fuel Pricing Map]

CFN Fuel prices

How can I find CFN fuel prices before I fill up? This is one of the most common questions business owners and fleet managers ask about the CFN fuel card. And it's an important question because every cent counts. Having insight into CFN fuel prices enables you to make informed choices that help maximize savings and impact your bottom line.

Consider a route from Los Angeles to Sacramento. Should your driver fuel in LA, Bakersfield, or wait until reaching Sacramento? Depending on where they stop, the fuel price could vary by more than 25¢ per gallon. Without access to current CFN fuel prices, you could miss out on potential savings.

In this article, we’ll explain how CFN fuel pricing works, discuss the challenges of accessing prices ahead of time, and show you how to access our CFN pricing map to see up-to-date prices for every location before your drivers fill up.

How CFN Fuel Prices Work

The Commercial Fueling Network (CFN) uses Oil Price Information Service (OPIS) to determine the base cost of fuel at all CFN stations. OPIS reports the wholesale rack prices by region, which is what gas stations and truck stops also use to determine fuel pricing. To establish the CFN station price, the CFN network adds freight costs and a fixed site interchange rate (the margin earned by the station owner) to the OPIS base price. Your CFN fuel card provider then adds a fuel card rate and fuel taxes to the OPIS CFN station price, resulting in your final price. This is known as cost-plus fuel card pricing.

For example, if a CFN station in San Diego sources fuel from the local San Diego rack, the OPIS price for that rack is used as the starting point. CFN card providers then add their fuel card rate and the required taxes for the final price you’ll pay at that specific CFN location.

CFN Fuel Pricing Formula
OPIS CFN station price + CFN fuel card provider rate + applicable taxes = total price per gallon

What is a CFN Fuel Card Provider?

The CFN network consists of multiple independent fuel card companies that own CFN stations and issue CFN fuel cards. CFN is responsible for maintaining the network, authorizing transactions, and facilitating the flow of transactions between card providers and stations. Each CFN fuel card provider issues the same CFN fuel card product but differentiates itself through unique pricing, customer service, billing, reporting, and software solutions.

This structure is much like the Visa or Mastercard network model, where various credit card companies offer cards accepted on the same network, yet differ by rewards, services, fees, rates, software, and other benefits. Similarly, CFN fuel card providers set their own fuel card rates, fees, reporting features, support resources, and tools for pricing visibility.

Why CFN Fuel Prices Aren’t Shown at the Pump

CFN fuel prices aren’t posted at the pump because rates are determined by each individual fuel card provider. Additionally, many CFN card providers offer customized pricing that can change depending on factors like monthly fuel volume, credit terms, billing cycles, or other contractual conditions. As a result, even customers using the same provider may pay different rates depending on their monthly fuel volume and credit terms.

How can CFN Cardholders Find CFN Fuel Prices?

The CFN fuel card portal provided by the CFN network does not display fuel pricing since rates are determined by the individual CFN provider. To obtain current CFN fuel prices, cardholders must look beyond the standard portal and request this information directly from their CFN provider.

Keep in mind that not every CFN card provider has invested the resources to provide CFN fuel price updates, which is why you should choose your card provider carefully. Some may only share pricing when your invoice is generated. Others may be able to give pricing by email or phone after you contact them. This can be inconvenient, and the pricing information you receive will be limited.

That's why P-Fleet developed a customer portal that features a comprehensive CFN fuel pricing map that's easy for our customers to access.
